Smoothies are one of the fastest growing drinks in the market today. The reason for this surge in popularity is easy to understand: smoothies are very easy to make, take very little preparation time, and are extremely nutritious and delicious! They have been a huge hit in the health and fitness world, and with good reason – smoothies allow you to get your daily dose of vitamins, minerals, protein and fibre without having to cook, cleanse or prepare the other ingredients separately.

A smoothie is basically a beverage made by blending various fresh fruit and/or vegetable(s) with a blender. A smoothie most often contains a liquid base like water, fruit juice or plant milk, sometimes even yogurt, ice cream, cottage cheese or milk, and at times some other powdered or frozen ingredients. It is typically high in vitamins, carbohydrates, protein and a little bit of fiber, which means that it helps you burn calories and fat faster and more efficiently. Since smoothies are high in calories and low in nutrients, it’s important that you take them in moderation – about one or two a day is generally good, especially if you are trying to lose weight or maintain your current weight.

One of the easiest and most delicious ways to make smoothies is using frozen fruit or other high quality produce like firm tofu. Using frozen fruit is not only easy but can be incredibly delicious. The great thing about using frozen fruit is that you can usually make a variation on the original smoothie without too much effort or time – just add some ice and some fruits and you are good to go. You can also make a variation by using frozen fruit in place of some of the more exotic ingredients like avocados or walnuts. Simply mix in some blended, frozen fruit, vanilla, a touch of yogurt and some ice and you have a healthy yet tasty snack to enjoy during your lunchtime or in the middle of dinner.
